Cold, guitar-driven Russian rock with new-wave textures.

History

Russian rock began in the Soviet Union in the 1960s, when beat groups in Moscow and Leningrad played covers of foreign hits on home-made gear and Beatlemania put a band in almost every school. Its other parent was the bard song of Vladimir Vysotsky, Bulat Okudzhava and Alexander Galich, and like it, the genre put the lyrics above everything else. The first Soviet rock festival took place in Kamensk-Uralsky on 18 December 1966. In the 1970s rock-leaning VIA ensembles such as Pesnyary, Ariel and Tsvety held the official stage, while Mashina Vremeni in Moscow and Aquarium in Leningrad played underground concerts, and tapes of such shows were copied from one recorder to the next. The golden age came in the 1980s. Rock clubs opened, and Kino, Alisa, DDT, Nautilus Pompilius and Grazhdanskaya Oborona sang about alcoholism, domestic violence and crime, often with a hidden political message. One Nautilus Pompilius song set Alain Delon and his double bourbon against the alcoholic father it describes. State radio and television ignored these bands, which reached listeners by word of mouth, and the lyric-driven music became a symbol of perestroika-era youth. In the 21st century nearly every kind of rock exists in Russia, and the label has blurred.
