History

Kino (Кино) formed in Leningrad, USSR, in 1981, founded by singer-guitarist Viktor Tsoi together with Alexei Rybin. The classic lineup later solidified around guitarist Yuri Kasparyan, bassist Igor Tikhomirov, and drummer Georgy Guryanov, producing a stripped-down, melodic rock sound shaped by post-punk and new wave rather than the folk-rock common on the Soviet scene at the time. Across the 1980s the band released a run of albums that became touchstones of Soviet rock: "Nachalnik Kamchatki" (1984), "Gruppa krovi" ("Group Blood," 1988), and "Zvezda po imeni Solntse" ("A Star Called Sun," 1989). The song "Peremen!" ("Change!"), featured in the 1988 film Assa, became an unofficial anthem of glasnost-era youth and later resurfaced as a protest chant decades on. Tsoi died in a car crash near Tukums, Latvia, on August 15, 1990, at 28, and the band effectively ended with him. His grave and the "Tsoi Wall" graffiti site on Moscow's Arbat remain pilgrimage points, and Kino's catalogue is still treated as foundational to Russian-language rock.
