History

Yana Dyagileva, known everywhere as Yanka, was born in Novosibirsk in 1966, and almost everything that survives of her was recorded on domestic equipment, often in flats. She sang with Grazhdanskaya Oborona and worked with Yegor Letov, whose GrOb Records put out her tapes. "Domoy!" and "Angedoniya" both appeared in 1989, "Styd i sram" in 1991. There is usually no arrangement to speak of: an acoustic guitar, sometimes a layer of noise behind it, and a voice that breaks exactly where another singer would hold the note. The lyrics work folk turns of phrase inside out, and the delivery keeps pushing past what the throat comfortably allows. In May 1991 Yanka died; her body was found in a river near Novosibirsk and the circumstances were never established. She was twenty-four. For Siberian punk her recordings remain the reference point.
