History
Nautilus Pompilius formed in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg), Russia; its founding date is usually given as November 10, 1982, when architecture students Vyacheslav Butusov and Dmitri Umetsky grew the band out of an earlier project called "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves." Over the following years the group's sound moved from hard rock through new wave and glam rock toward post-punk, gothic rock and art rock, driven by Butusov's low baritone and the literary lyrics of Ilya Kormiltsev, who later became a well-known publisher. By 1987-88 Nautilus Pompilius ranked alongside Kino, DDT and Akvarium as one of the USSR's biggest rock acts, boosted by exposure on the popular TV program "Vzglyad" and hits such as "Ya khochu byt s toboy" ("I Want to Be With You"). Band members also had cameo roles in director Alexei Balabanov's earliest short films. The group split and reformed several times, relocating from Sverdlovsk to Leningrad in 1989, breaking up in 1997, and briefly reuniting in 2003, 2004, 2013 and 2014. Butusov and Kormiltsev remain the act's most enduring figures.
