History

Wave is a bass music genre and a visual style that grew up online in the early 2010s, on SoundCloud and Tumblr, among DIY producers who were often teenagers with no ties to club culture. The sound rests on a filtered reese bass, trap drums with fast hi-hats, atmospheric melodies and chopped vocal samples pitched up and down and soaked in reverb and delay, usually at 120 to 140 BPM. The visuals run on CGI, animation and imagery from video games and cartoons. The scene dates to at least 2013, when the UK producer Klimeks began tagging his SoundCloud tracks as wave; his label Wavemob put out its first release, the compilation wave 001, in 2016. Plastician championed the sound on Rinse FM from 2013, and his December 2015 mix The Wave Pool MMXV spread the name through the music press. Kareful's Deluge, from early 2016, is described as the first full-length wave album. In May 2017 Vice ran a piece arguing that wave was a constructed microgenre meant to game streaming algorithms, which Plastician disputed. That same year the Perth producers Skeler and Ytho mixed in trance and hardstyle and coined hardwave.
