History
Ploho play cold, melodic post-punk rooted in Soviet new wave and became one of the main names of the new Russian wave of the 2010s. The band formed in Novosibirsk in 2013 around singer and guitarist Viktor Uzhakov. Its members have said that growing up amid the crime and chaos of the 1990s drew them to punk early, and that Kino shaped them more than anyone. After a run of EPs came the albums Бумажные бомбы in 2017, Куда птицы улетают умирать in 2018, which Portland radio station XRAY.fm put in its top 25 albums of the year, and Пыль in 2019. In 2020 they signed with the Canadian label Artoffact Records, which released Фантомные чувства in 2021, and they appeared on screen as a band in the Lithuanian film Isaac. In 2022 the musicians moved to Serbia, released Когда душа спит that year and Почва in 2024, and later toured Mexico. Uzhakov also runs a darker side project, Bitcevsky Park. Ploho are recognised by detached vocals, echoing guitars and keyboards, and lyrics about grey cities, tower blocks and a youth spent waiting for something to change.
