History
Zemfira Ramazanova, known mononymously as Zemfira, is a Russian rock singer-songwriter born August 26, 1976, in Ufa, Bashkortostan. A classically trained pianist and vocalist, she formed her band in 1998 with musicians Rinat Akhmadiyev, Sergei Sozinov, Sergei Mirolyubov and Vadim Solovyov after producer Leonid Burlakov (of Mumiy Troll) heard her home-recorded demo tapes. Her self-titled debut album (1999) made her one of Russian rock's first major female stars, driven by singles like "AIDS," "Arrivederci," and "Rockets." Her second album, Forgive Me My Love (2000), produced the hits "Searching" and "Ripe" and cemented her stardom; she has since sold over three million records. Later albums include Vendetta (2005), Thank You (2007), and Borderline (2021), her first release after an eight-year gap. In 2004 she performed "We Are the Champions" alongside Queen at the MTV Russia Music Awards. Since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, she has released outspoken anti-war songs and left the country; in 2023 Russian authorities designated her a "foreign agent."
