History

Alyans came together in Moscow at the start of the 1980s around singer and guitarist Igor Zhuravlev, and kept its distance from the guitar underground of the period. The band built on keyboard layers, steady mid tempos and a cool, unpressed delivery. Its best known song, "Na zare", was written by keyboard player Oleg Parastaev and recorded in 1987: an analogue synth pulse, a soft male vocal, a saxophone line stretched over the top. The video was shot for Soviet television and then sat in the archives for most of three decades. Around the middle of the 2010s listeners abroad found it through online communities devoted to late Soviet electronic pop, the song spread on its own, and Alyans went back to touring and festival bills. Recording never stopped either, with the album "Sdelano v Belom" arriving in 2010. On a genre map this is new wave assembled from keyboards rather than guitars, melancholy kept at room temperature.
