History
Splean (Сплин) is a Russian rock band formed in Saint Petersburg on May 27, 1994, led by singer-songwriter Alexander Vasilyev, who writes nearly all of the group's songs. The band's name comes from a poem by Silver Age poet Sasha Cherny, quoted in "Под сурдинку," a track on the debut album "Пыльная быль," which sold roughly 10,000 cassettes around Saint Petersburg on release. Splean's sound blends alternative rock, pop rock, indie rock and folk rock, built around Vasilyev's melancholic, literary lyrics. The band's real breakthrough came with 1998's "Гранатовый альбом" (Garnet Album), which made them nationally famous and produced the enduring hit single "Орбит без сахара" (Orbit Without Sugar). That same year, Splean opened for The Rolling Stones in Moscow, a rare booking for a Russian rock act at the time. Despite frequent lineup changes over three decades, including the departure of longtime guitarist Stas Berezovsky and flautist Yan Nikolenko in 2006, Vasilyev has kept the band recording steadily, from "25-й кадр" (2001) through "Резонанс" (2014) to "Вира и майна" (2020).
