History
Mumiy Troll is a Russian rock band formed in Vladivostok on 16 October 1983 by singer and guitarist Ilya Lagutenko, originally under the name "Mumi Troll," a nod to Tove Jansson's Moomin books. After an early tape album and a stint cut short by Lagutenko's service in the Soviet Navy, the band broke up and stayed inactive for six years while he worked in China and London, reforming in 1996. Their 1997 debut studio album "Morskaya" became a breakthrough hit, followed the same year by "Ikra." Lagutenko coined the term "rockapops" to describe the group's sound, blending rock structures with pop hooks and later Britpop influences picked up in London. The classic lineup included Yuri Tsaler, Evgeny "Sdvig" Zvidenny, and Oleg Pungin. In 1998 their video for "Vladivostok 2000" became the first Russian music video aired on MTV Russia, and in 2001 the band represented Russia at Eurovision, finishing 12th. A 2005 album cover was pulled from the printers on release day after distributors noticed the bride and groom wore masks of Putin and Khodorkovsky.
