History
Sektor Gaza ("Gas Sector") is a Russian punk rock band founded in Voronezh in 1987 by singer-songwriter Yuri Klinskikh, known by his stage nickname Yura Khoy. The name comes from a heavily industrial, pollution-choked district of Voronezh that locals nicknamed "the gas sector." The first stable lineup formed in 1988 with drummer Oleg Kryuchkov, bassist Semyon Titievsky, and guitarist Sergey Tupikin; backing vocalist Tatyana Fateeva joined in 1990. The band's sound mixed raw punk and folk-influenced melodies with crude, blackly humorous lyrics about provincial Russian life, quickly making it one of the most recognizable and controversial acts of the 1990s Russian rock scene. Key albums include "Gulyay, Muzhik!" (1992), "Nazhmi na Gaz" and the self-titled "Sektor Gaza" (1993), and "Tantsy Posle Poreva" (1994). One verified bit of trivia: to afford studio time for early recordings, Klinskikh sold his own motorcycle. He died suddenly on July 4, 2000, at age 35, effectively ending the band; a final album, "Vosstavshiy iz Ada," was released posthumously.
