History
Nol appeared in Leningrad in the second half of the 1980s and belonged to the rock club scene there, with one detail that separates it from everything around it: the lead instrument of this punk band was the bayan, the Russian button accordion, in the hands of Fyodor Chistyakov, who also sang. The bayan carries the melody, the rhythm section pushes underneath, and the vocal sounds like a courtyard story told with a straight face. "Chelovek i koshka" (1991) and "Idu, kuryu" are still played on radio and have been quoted to the point of becoming idioms. The material sits somewhere between punk, chanson and village dance tunes, and the jokes in it are rarely only jokes. Chistyakov's later career took him away from the band for long stretches, and the early recordings remain the ones people return to.
