History
Pilot (Пилот, often stylized ПилОт) is a Russian rock band formed in Saint Petersburg on January 11, 1997, by singer Ilya Chert (Ilya Knabengof) after his previous band Military Jane broke up. The original lineup, Chert on vocals, Roman Chuykov on guitar, Stanislav Markov on bass, and Viktor Kuzmichev on drums, recorded the debut album Voyna (War) within months and released it that December. Over nearly three decades the band's sound has moved between punk rock, alternative rock, hard rock, grunge and folk rock, staying rooted in Russian rock. Pilot built a devoted following with singles such as Tyurma (Prison) and Osen (Autumn), the latter winning Song of the Year at the 2013 Chartova Dyuzhina awards; the band was also named Group of the Year at the 2004 Fuzz Awards. By 2019 they had released 13 studio albums and 20 music videos, regularly selling out venues to crowds of over 6,000. The band lost two members to early deaths: guitarist Roman Chuykov in 2013 and guitarist Viktor Bastrakov, who died of a blood clot in 2014. Chert remains the only original member, now playing alongside drummer Nikita Belozerov and, since 2022, guitarist Alexey Svetlov and bassist Ivan Petrov.
