History
Affinazh (Аффинаж, French for "refinement") is a Russian band formed in Saint Petersburg in 2012 by vocalist, guitarist, and lyricist Mikhail Kalinin (stage name Em Kalinin) and bassist Sergei Shilyaev (Sergeich), who had met years earlier in Vologda before relocating to Saint Petersburg. The band describes its sound as "noir-chanson," blending the tradition of Russian urban song with indie aesthetics and dark folk, and calls itself "a small, sad orchestra." The lineup later expanded to include accordionist Alexander Koryukovets and trombonist Alexander Evdokimov (Sasha Om), growing to six members by 2019. Affinazh have released eight studio albums, including "Русские песни" (2015) and the fifth-anniversary record "Золото" (2017), along with numerous EPs. Their songs "Нравится" and "Саша" have been featured in Russian feature films, and in 2020 the band performed "Неправда" as a musical guest on the popular late-night show "Вечерний Ургант."
