History
Pelageya Khanova was born in Novosibirsk in 1986 and was singing folk repertoire in public before she was ten, which brought the family to Moscow while she was still a child. She has led a band under her own first name since the late 1990s, setting Russian and Cossack traditional songs against a full rock rhythm section. The voice is the whole method: open-throated, chest-heavy, carrying the ornament and sliding attack of village singing rather than conservatory placement, and loud enough to sit over distorted guitar without studio help. Tropy (2011) gathers that approach across originals and arrangements, and Vishnya is among the songs audiences ask for by name. Lyubo, bratsy, lyubo, a Cossack song older than any recording of it, has long been a fixture of her live set. From the first season of the television show Golos in 2012 she sat as a coach, which moved her out of a folk-rock circuit and made her the best known face of the style in the country.
