History
Tantsy Minus (Russian: Танцы минус, roughly "Dances Minus") is a Russian rock band founded by singer-songwriter Vyacheslav Petkun. Before starting the project, Petkun played in the Leningrad art-punk band Taynoye Golosovaniye. His new band first performed as "Tantsy" on 10 June 1992 and took the name "Tantsy Minus" at a show on 8 May 1994; 1 April 1995 is treated as the official founding date. That year Petkun and bassist Oleg Polevshchikov relocated to Moscow, where the full lineup came together. The band plays melodic rock with pop and art-rock touches. Its 1999 album "Flora/Fauna" and the single "Gorod" ("City") brought wider recognition, and the group has won Russian Radio's "Golden Gramophone" award multiple times, in 2000, 2001, and 2009. A genuinely offbeat trivia note: frontman Petkun took the role of Quasimodo in the 2002 Russian staging of the musical Notre-Dame de Paris, whose song "Belle" became a radio hit. The lineup has shifted often since; guitarist Anton Khabibulin, a member from 2006, died in December 2022. The band released a new album, "Dalshe Budet," in September 2024.
