History
Motorama is a Russian post-punk and indie rock band formed in Rostov-on-Don in 2005 by singer and guitarist Vladislav Parshin. The lineup has also included bassist/guitarist Irina Parshina and drummer Mikhail Nikulin, alongside several past members. Parshin sings in English, and the band's early mini-albums, Horse (2008) and Bear (2009), drew immediate comparisons to Joy Division — critics repeatedly noted his vocals' resemblance to Ian Curtis, and the group was accused of copying the British band's sound. That changed with their debut album Alps (2010), which introduced brighter new-wave and new-romantic textures, and the follow-up Calendar (2012), released on the French label Talitres and reviewed by BBC Music. Later albums, including Poverty (2015), Dialogues (2016) and Sleep, and I Will Sing (2023), moved further into synth-tinged indie pop. Notably, despite emerging from a mid-sized Russian city rather than Moscow, Motorama built a fanbase that press has described as larger in parts of Europe and Latin America than at home, touring extensively abroad since 2011.
