History
Alisa is a Russian rock band formed in Leningrad in 1983 by bassist Svyatoslav Zadery from the wreckage of his earlier group Crystal Ball. The lineup found its defining voice in December 1984, when vocalist Konstantin Kinchev (born Konstantin Panfilov) and guitarist Pyotr Samoilov joined; Kinchev became the band's permanent leader from 1986 onward. Alisa's sound moved from new wave and post-punk in the mid-1980s toward hard rock, later taking on heavier, metal-influenced arrangements. Their first three albums, Energiya (1985), Blok Ada (1987), and Shestoy Lesnichiy (1989), each sold over a million copies. In 1989 the band appeared on the Red Wave compilation alongside Aquarium, Kino, and Strange Games, which helped introduce Soviet rock to American audiences. In 1987 a Soviet newspaper accused Kinchev of Nazi sympathies, a libel case he later won in court. After Kinchev's 1992 baptism in Jerusalem, Orthodox Christian themes became central to the band's lyrics. A 2004 Komsomolskaya Pravda poll named Alisa the most influential group in Russian rock history; the band remains active today.
