History
Uma Turman (Ума Турман, later internationally known as Uma2rman) is a Russian pop-rock and alternative rock band formed in July 2003 in Nizhny Novgorod by brothers Sergey and Vladimir Kristovsky, who named the project after their favorite actress, Uma Thurman. Extra musicians were later hired for live shows, including drummer Sergey Solodkin and guitarist Yuri Terletsky. The band's debut public performance came at a Zemfira concert in Moscow in December 2003, and its 2004 debut album "V gorode N" and single "Praskovya" made them stars, followed by the hit "Uma Turman" and the theme song for the blockbuster film "Night Watch" (Timur Bekmambetov). They won Best Debut at the 2004 MTV Russia Music Awards and two Muz-TV awards in 2005. A genuinely odd trivia fact: when the band signed with Warner Music for shows in France in 2005, the real Uma Thurman's agents refused permission to use her name, forcing the group to rebrand internationally as "Uma2rman." They also wrote the theme song for the sitcom "Papiny dochki" and won a Golden Gramophone award in 2016.
