History
Chizh & Co is a Russian rock band formed around singer-songwriter and guitarist Sergei "Chizh" Chigrakov. It began in 1993 when Chigrakov, then playing in the band Raznye Lyudi, recorded a solo album in Saint Petersburg with help from Boris Grebenshchikov (Aquarium) and members of DDT; encouraged by the reception, he moved to the city in May 1994 and assembled a full band with bassist Alexei Romanyuk and drummer Vladimir Khanutin. The group's sound blends Russian rock with blues-rock, folk-rock, and rock'n'roll. Their 1994 debut studio album Perekrestok and 1995's O lyubvi produced the chart hits "O'k" and "O lyubvi," followed by a live Greatest Hits recording. The 1997 covers album Bombardirovshchiki, dedicated to the musicians' parents, earned Chizh & Co "group of the year" from the magazine Rock-Fuzz, and in 1998 the band played London's Astoria club and recorded an acoustic session for BBC Radio with Seva Novgorodtsev. Their most recent studio album, Nechego teryat, came out in 1999; the band has continued touring since without releasing a new one.
