History
Chyorny Obelisk ("Black Obelisk") is a Soviet and Russian heavy metal band formed in Moscow in 1986, taking its name from Erich Maria Remarque's novel. The group was led by bassist and vocalist Anatoly Krupnov, regarded as one of the USSR's finest bass players, and its sound moved across heavy metal, speed/thrash metal, funk metal and groove metal over the years. Early members included drummer Nikolai Agafoshkin and guitarists Mikhail Svetlov and Yuri Alekseev; the band won a "best metal lyrics" award at the 1987 Festival of Hopes and scored an early hit with "Polnoch" (Midnight), released on a French compilation of Soviet rock. Krupnov disbanded the group in 1988, revived it in 1990, and led it through albums such as "Stena" (Wall, 1991) and "Yeshcho odin den" (One More Day, 1992); the band also played the August 1991 "Rock on the Barricades" concert supporting Boris Yeltsin, and opened stadium shows for Accept and Faith No More in 1993. Drummer Sergei Komarov was shot and killed by a robber in 1990. Krupnov died of a heart attack in a recording studio on 27 February 1997; former members reconstituted the band in 1999, and it continues releasing albums to this day.
