History
Bi-2 is a Russian-language alternative rock band formed in 1988 in Babruysk (then the Byelorussian SSR) by two teenage friends, Aleksandr "Shura" Uman and Igor "Lyova" Bortnik, who had met a few years earlier in a Minsk theater studio. Their early names, "Brothers in Arms" and then "Bereg Istiny" (Shore of Truth), were eventually shortened to the abbreviation Bi-2. After the Soviet collapse the pair emigrated to Israel, then split when Shura moved on to Australia in 1993 while Lyova stayed behind and served in the Israeli army; they kept writing songs together long-distance, mailing each other cassette tapes. Reunited in Australia in 1998, they relocated to Moscow in 1999, where a slow start turned around after directors Aleksei Balabanov and Sergei Bodrov Jr. featured their song "Polkovniku Nikto Ne Pishet" in the hit film Brother 2 (2000). Bi-2 went on to become one of Russia's most decorated rock acts, winning MTV Russia's Best Rock Act in 2007 and a World Music Award for Best-Selling Russian Group in 2001. In 2023 the band's members relocated to Israel.
