History

Born in 1959, Garik Sukachev reached a wide audience with Brigada S in the second half of the 1980s and formed Neprikasaemye after that band ended. "Moya babushka kurit trubku" and "Napoi menya vodoy" travelled far outside the rock audience and are still sung back at his concerts. The material is assembled from urban romance, march and waltz, with a brass section on top and a vocal built on rasp and half speech rather than on melody. The scenes come from courtyards, railway stations and late Soviet communal flats, and on stage Sukachev works closer to a character than to a singer: a hat, a gesture, the intonation of a street storyteller. He has worked steadily outside music as well, acting in films and directing them. The mix of brass, chanson phrasing and rock rhythm section is his own and has few imitators.
