History
Auktyon (АукцЫон) formed in Leningrad in 1978, when teenage guitarist Leonid Fyodorov started a band with schoolmates that cycled through names — Blue Boys, Paragraph, Phaeton — before settling on Auktyon around 1983, when the group joined the Leningrad Rock Club. Early lineups were chaotic, with members drafted into the army or drifting off; the band only stabilized in 1985 around Fyodorov, bassist Viktor Bondarik, keyboardist Dmitry Ozersky, drummer Igor Cherednik, saxophonist Nikolai Fedorovich, and frontman Oleg Garkusha, whose manic stage dancing and poetry became the band's visual signature. A strong 1986 set at the IV Leningrad Rock Festival broke them nationally. Their sound moved from post-punk and new wave into avant-garde art-rock and jazz-rock, coloured by European and Central Asian folk influences and the poetry of Velimir Khlebnikov, and they toured Europe when few Soviet acts could. A later highlight: Garkusha played the lead role and Fyodorov scored director Alexei Balabanov's final film, "Ya tozhe khochu" (2012), while their song "Doroga" appeared in "Brat 2."
