History
Piknik (Пикник) is a Russian rock band formed in Leningrad in September 1978 by students of the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute, growing out of an amateur group called Orion. The original lineup included singer Alexei Dobychin, guitarist Sergei Omelnichenko, bassist Evgeny Voloshchuk, flautist Nikolai Mikhailov and drummer Alexander Matskov. In November 1981 guitarist and songwriter Edmund Shklyarsky joined; he became the band's permanent leader, lead vocalist and sole constant member from that point on. Piknik's sound blends art rock and gothic rock with theatrical, surreal stage shows, an aesthetic Shklyarsky has said draws on the paintings of Salvador Dalí and René Magritte. The debut tape album, "Дым" (Smoke), was recorded in 1982 at Andrei Tropillo's studio; in 1983 the band won an award at the first Leningrad Rock Club festival alongside Aquarium and Zoopark, though by 1984 it was officially blacklisted from Soviet record studios. Piknik has released over two dozen studio albums, including "Иероглиф," "Родом ниоткуда" and "Театр абсурда." Since 1990 the band has used a distinctive graphic emblem on its album covers and stage sets, a rare visual-branding move for a Soviet-era rock act.
