History
Sekret (Секрет, "Secret") formed in Leningrad, USSR, taking shape as a trio around Maxim Leonidov and Nikolai Fomenko in 1981-82 before settling into its classic beat-quartet lineup on April 20, 1983, when guitarist Andrei Zabludovsky and drummer Alexei Murashov joined. Their sound revived 1950s-60s Western rock and roll and beat pop, styled closely after the early Beatles, whose song "Do You Want to Know a Secret?" gave the band its name. Early on, the group turned down an offer from producer Bari Alibasov to relocate to Moscow and change their repertoire, choosing to stay independent in Leningrad instead. They became laureates of the Leningrad Rock Club festival in 1984, and their official debut album "Гремят барабаны" (1986) became one of the best-selling records in the USSR, followed by Melodiya releases in 1987 and 1989 and international touring, including a 1988 Soviet-Italian rock festival. The classic lineup dissolved in 1990 when Leonidov emigrated to Israel; both he and Fomenko went on to become well-known actors and media figures in Russia.
