History
Grigory Leps (born Grigory Lepsveridze, 16 July 1962, in Sochi) is a Russian singer-songwriter from a Georgian family, known for his distinctive low, growling baritone. After finishing music school as a percussionist and singing in restaurants and rock bands, he moved to Moscow, where he struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction before landing a record deal. His 1995 debut album Khrani Vas Bog (May God Keep You) produced the hit "Natali," released while he was hospitalized. Leps's early sound sat in the Russian chanson tradition; from the 2000 album Spasibo Narod onward he shifted toward rock, a direction cemented by 2004's Parus, an album of Vladimir Vysotsky covers performed in the Kremlin. Later releases like Labirint and V Tsentre Zemli (2006, premiered at Luzhniki Stadium) kept him a fixture of Russian pop-rock. He was named People's Artist of Russia in 2022 and was, for several years in the 2010s, the country's highest-earning singer. In 2013 the US Treasury sanctioned him over alleged ties to a Eurasian organized-crime network; the EU sanctioned him separately in 2022.
