History
Leningrad (full name "Gruppirovka Leningrad") is a Russian band from Saint Petersburg, officially dated to January 1997, led by Sergey Shnurov ("Shnur"). The earliest lineup, fronted by singer Igor Vdovin, played rough courtyard-style music echoing Soviet-era kvartirnik songs; after Vdovin left, Shnurov took over vocals and the band settled into ska punk built on a large horn section, mixing trumpet, trombone, tuba and accordion with blunt, often obscene lyrics about drinking and everyday Russian life. In 2002 the lineup was overhauled when most of the St. Petersburg ska band Spitfire joined, recording the album "Piraty XXI Veka." Jazz singer Yulia Kogan became a fixture on backing vocals from 2007. The group split in 2008-2010, reunited, and in 2016 released the video "V Pitere - pit'" ("Drink in Piter"), which drew over 27 million YouTube views within six months and even triggered a St. Petersburg prosecutor's review over alleged promotion of alcoholism. Shnurov has also composed film music, including for the cult movie "Bumer."
