History
Kukryniksy is a Russian rock band formed in 1997 by Alexey Gorshenev, a former drummer who is the brother of Korol i Shut frontman Mikhail "Gorshok" Gorshenev. The band played its first show on May 28, 1997, at Moscow club Polygon and released its self-titled debut album on Manchester Files around 1998. The band's borrowed name, taken from a trio of Soviet satirical cartoonists, had no connection to the musicians and simply stuck. Musically, Kukryniksy started out in punk rock before shifting toward post-punk and goth-rock textures on later records, while lyrically drawing on Russian poetic tradition, including songs set to Sergei Esenin's verse. Over more than two decades the lineup changed constantly (the drum stool alone saw five different players), settling eventually into Gorshenev, guitarist Igor Voronov, drummer Mikhail Fomin and bassist Dmitry Oganyan. The band released nine studio albums and contributed music to the war film "The 9th Company." In 2010 they also recorded an album with American singer Stephanie Starr under the side-project name K Republic. Gorshenev later retired the Kukryniksy name in favor of a new project simply called Gorshenev.
