History
Pyatnitsa (5'nizza, pronounced "Pyatnitsa," Russian for "Friday") is a duo formed in Kharkiv, Ukraine, by Sergei Babkin and Andrei Zaporozhets, who met as students at the Kharkiv Lyceum of Arts and started performing together in 2000. Their sound blends reggae, hip-hop, funk, and soul, built around acoustic guitar, sung/rapped vocals, and human beatbox, and though Ukrainian, almost all their songs are in Russian. The duo broke through in Russia after Nashe Radio producer Mikhail Kozyrev put their song "Soldat" on air in late 2002. Their debut studio album, "Pyatnitsa" (2003), included "Soldat," "Vesna," and the title track, followed by a second album, "O5," in 2005. The band split in 2007 mid-recording of a third album over a creative disagreement about instrumentation; that unfinished material became the debut album of Zaporozhets's next band, SunSay. Babkin and Zaporozhets reunited in 2015 for a run of concerts across Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and the US.
