History
Melnitsa (Мельница) is a Moscow folk-rock band formed in October 1999 by singer-harpist Natalia "Helavisa" O'Shea and percussionist Alexey Sapkov out of the remains of the disbanded group Till Eulenspiegel. Helavisa, a philologist with a PhD in Celtic linguistics and a former Moscow State University lecturer, leads the band on Celtic harp and vocals, building a sound that blends Russian folk balladry with Irish and North European folk textures over rock instrumentation. The band's breakthrough came in 2005, when the song "Nochnaya Kobyla" topped Nashe Radio's "Chartova Dyuzhina" chart for two and a half months and was named its song of the year. Later studio albums include "Dikiye Travy" (2009), "Angelofreniya" (2012), "Alkhimiya" (2015) and "Khimera" (2016); the band has also headlined major Moscow venues such as Olimpiysky. The current lineup includes guitarist Sergey Vishnyakov, bassist Alexey Kozhanov, drummer Dmitry Frolov, wind player Dmitry Kargin and violinist Alexey Orlov alongside O'Shea.
