History

Three musicians from Minsk started Molchat Doma in 2017: Egor Shkutko sings, Roman Komogortsev handles guitar and synthesisers, Pavel Kozlov plays bass. Their second album, Etazhi (2018), carried the sound that travelled: drum machine, chorused bass high in the mix, cold synth lines, and a flat baritone that never lifts. The cover photograph shows the Ministry of Highways building in Tbilisi, which fixed the band's Soviet modernist image in one frame. In 2020 the track Sudno, built on a poem by the Yekaterinburg poet Boris Ryzhy, spread through TikTok and pulled a Belarusian post-punk band into rotation far outside the Russian-speaking world. Sacred Bones reissued the early records and released Monument (2020) with a thicker mix leaning toward synth-pop. Touring across Europe and North America followed. The group writes and sings in Russian, keeps arrangements sparse, and leans on the contrast between a mechanical rhythm section and vocals delivered with almost no dynamic range.
