History
Epidemia is a Moscow power metal band formed in the early 1990s around guitarist and songwriter Yuri Melisov. Early albums, «Загадка волшебной страны» (2001) among them, followed the European template closely: fast double-kick drumming, twin guitar harmonies, high clean vocals, fantasy subject matter. «Эльфийская рукопись» (2004) changed the scale. It was written as a metal opera with a continuous plot, the parts were handed to guest singers from other Russian metal bands while Maxim Samosvat carried the lead role, and on stage it was played as a costumed production rather than an ordinary set. «Эльфийская рукопись: Сказание на все времена» (2007) continued the story. Both records became a reference point for Russian-language power metal, and the device of giving each guest singer a character was picked up by other bands through the decade.
