Trap

menacinghypnoticraw126–146 BPM

Trap beat from the 2010s: distorted sub boom, skeletal hat pattern, triplet hat rolls, menacing and hypnotic in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.

History

Trap is Southern hip-hop named after the trap house, Atlanta slang for a place where drugs are sold. Rappers were describing that life from the early 1990s, with Pocket Full of Stones by UGK in 1992, and as David Drake of Complex put it, the trap was a real place before it was a genre. Rappers with drug-dealer personas, among them T.I., Young Jeezy and Gucci Mane, carried it into the mainstream with crossover hits in the early and mid-2000s. The sound came together in Atlanta: Roland TR-808 kicks tuned with a long decay so they double as bass, crisp snares, hi-hats rolled in double and triple time and cinematic strings and brass. Lex Luger made more than 200 songs in 2010 and 2011, among them B.M.F. for Rick Ross, and a later wave of producers included Metro Boomin. I Don't Like by Chief Keef spun off drill. In 2018 hip-hop became America's most popular music for the first time. Future, Migos and Travis Scott have all topped the Hot 100 with trap songs, and the country trap of Old Town Road by Lil Nas X set the record for the most weeks at the top of the Hot 100.
