History
Face, born Ivan Timofeevich Dremin on 8 April 1997 in Ufa, Russia, is a rapper who emerged from Russia's underground scene in the mid-2010s. He and his older brother Bogdan coined the stage name, and he released his first material in 2015 before breaking through in 2017 with the video "Burger," which drew over 30 million YouTube views. His sound blends trap, emo hip-hop, cloud rap and what critics label "meme rap," and he has cited influences such as A$AP Rocky, Kanye West, Playboi Carti, Lil Pump and Lil Uzi Vert. In 2018 he shifted toward political hip-hop with the album "Mysterious Ways," addressing poverty, corruption and prison torture in Russia. After Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Face became an outspoken critic of the Kremlin, was placed on Russia's "foreign agents" registry that April, relocated to Poland, pulled his catalog from Russian streaming stores in protest, and performed at a benefit concert for Ukrainian refugees, publicly apologizing to them.
