Style recipe for Suno v5
Emo Rap
Emo rap from the 2010s: clean electric guitar, acoustic guitar loop, melancholy piano, melancholic and raw in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.
History
Emo rap came out of the SoundCloud underground of the early 2010s, laying sing-rapped vocals over trap beats and trading hip hop bravado for depression, loneliness, anxiety, heartbreak, drugs and suicide. Producers often sampled 2000s pop punk and emo. The name is older than the sound: Slug of Atmosphere says he coined it in a 1997 IR Magazine article. Bones, with his VHS-shot videos, and the GothBoiClique collective, formed in 2012, set the template, while the Swedish rapper Yung Lean, whose 2013 mixtape Unknown Death 2002 is now seen as a forerunner, lent fans their nickname through his Sad Boys crew. The breakthrough came in 2017, when Lil Uzi Vert's "XO Tour Llif3" reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and XXXTentacion released 17. Then came a run of deaths: Lil Peep died of a fentanyl overdose in November 2017, XXXTentacion was murdered in June 2018 and "SAD!" went to number one the following week, and Juice WRLD, known for "Lucid Dreams", died in December 2019. In 2018 emo rap was the fastest-growing genre on Spotify. A second wave brought "Mood" by 24kGoldn and Iann Dior in 2020, and the style helped shape hyperpop.
