History
XXXTentacion, born Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy (January 23, 1998 - June 18, 2018) in Plantation, Florida, grew up in Lauderhill, part of Broward County. He began posting music on SoundCloud in 2013 after time in a juvenile detention center, and in 2014 co-founded the underground collective Members Only, becoming one of the defining voices of the emerging SoundCloud rap scene. His sound fused trap, emo, trap metal, nu metal, indie rock, lo-fi, hip-hop, R&B, and punk rock, drawing on third-wave emo and grunge influences and pairing distortion with heavy guitar-backed instrumentals - an approach that helped establish emo rap as a genre and later shaped the rage-music sound that followed his death. The 2016 single "Look at Me!" brought him mainstream attention. His debut album 17 (2017) reached number two on the Billboard 200, and ? (2018) debuted at number one; both went triple platinum. Its lead single "Sad!" hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 posthumously and was certified diamond by the RIAA in 2021. Onfroy was fatally shot during a robbery in Deerfield Beach, Florida, on June 18, 2018, at age 20.
