History
Dequantes Lamar came up in Atlanta and broke through in 2013 with 'Type of Way', a record built on a warbling, half-sung delivery that slid between notes instead of landing on them. A verse on YG's 'My N***a' the same year widened his reach. In 2014 he joined Young Thug and Birdman for the mixtape Rich Gang: Tha Tour Pt. 1, now cited as one of the central documents of Atlanta's melodic turn: two voices using a trap beat as a surface to sing over, pitch wobble and all, with the takes left rough. 'Flex (Ooh Ooh Ooh)' followed in 2015. The manner he and Thug worked out on those sessions carried straight into the next generation, Gunna and Lil Baby among them, where the sung-rap hybrid became the default setting rather than an experiment. He died in September 2024 at the age of 34.
