History
Atmosphere is an American hip-hop duo formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the mid-1990s, built around rapper Slug (Sean Daley, born 1972) and producer/DJ Ant (Anthony Davis). Slug originally started the group with high-school friend Derek Turner ("Spawn"), who left after their 1997 debut EP Overcast!; Ant has produced nearly every Atmosphere release since. The duo's sound blends introspective, storytelling-driven verses with soulful, sample-based boom-bap production, and became a cornerstone of underground/indie hip-hop in the 2000s. In 1995 Slug co-founded the label Rhymesayers Entertainment, which has released the group's entire catalog and grew into one of the most influential independent hip-hop labels in the US. A notable turning point came in 2001, when two limited tour-only EPs were combined into Lucy Ford: The Atmosphere EPs, which sold well enough to earn a full commercial release. Later albums include God Loves Ugly (2002) and Southsiders (2014), named for the pair's south Minneapolis roots. The group has continued touring and recording for over 25 years.
