Murs
West Coast hip-hop from the 2000s: jazzy electric piano, live upright bass, sparse trap hats, defiant and menacing in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.
Style: Conscious hip-hop
History
Murs (born Nicholas Neil Carter, March 16, 1978, in Los Angeles) is an American rapper and singer active since the mid-1990s. His stage name is a backronym he has explained multiple ways, including "Making the Universe Recognize and Submit." He formed the trio 3 Melancholy Gypsys with high school classmates Scarub and Eligh, then joined the Living Legends collective in 1996, releasing his solo debut, F'Real, in 1997. Working across alternative hip-hop and rap rock, he built a catalog defined by conversational, personal storytelling rather than typical battle-rap braggadocio. He has recorded as one half of Felt with Atmosphere's Slug since 2002, and made several acclaimed collaborative albums with producer 9th Wonder, starting with Murs 3:16: The 9th Edition (2004). He later signed to Warner Bros. for Murs for President (2008) and to Tech N9ne's Strange Music from 2014 to 2019. In 2016, he set a Guinness World Record by rapping non-stop for 24 hours on a Twitch livestream. He has also been an outspoken advocate for LGBT rights within hip-hop.
