History
Little Brother is an American hip-hop group from Durham, North Carolina, formed in 1998 when rappers Phonte (Phonte Coleman) and Rapper Big Pooh (Thomas Jones) met producer and DJ 9th Wonder (Patrick Douthit) as students at North Carolina Central University. The trio, part of the Justus League collective, built a sound rooted in soulful, sample-based boom-bap production and sharp, conversational lyricism. After signing to the independent ABB Records, they released their acclaimed debut, The Listening (2003), which led to a deal with Atlantic Records. Their 2005 follow-up, The Minstrel Show, was a concept album likening the modern rap industry to 19th-century minstrelsy; BET controversially refused to air the video for its single "Lovin' It," reportedly calling the song too intelligent for its audience. 9th Wonder left in 2007 amid creative differences, and Phonte and Big Pooh carried on as a duo through 2010's Leftback before going on hiatus. All three eventually reunited on stage, and Phonte and Big Pooh revived Little Brother in 2019 with the album May the Lord Watch. Phonte later earned a Grammy nomination for his work with The Foreign Exchange.
