West Coast hip-hop from the 1990s: jazzy electric piano, live upright bass, sparse trap hats, defiant and menacing in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.

History
Black Star is an American hip-hop duo formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 1997 by rappers Talib Kweli and Yasiin Bey (then performing as Mos Def). The two met at poetry open mics and, after working separately with acts like De La Soul, Mood, and Hi-Tek, shelved their solo debuts to record together. Their sole studio album from the 1990s, Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, was released on Rawkus Records on September 29, 1998, produced largely by Hi-Tek alongside Shawn J. Period, Ge-ology, 88-Keys, and Da Beatminerz. Named after Marcus Garvey's Black Star Line shipping company, the album pushed back against hip-hop's commercial, gangsta-rap turn with socially conscious, philosophical lyricism, addressing Brooklyn life and the fallout from the deaths of Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. on tracks like "Definition" and "Re: Definition." It became an underground classic, ranking 24th in The Village Voice's 1998 Pazz & Jop critics' poll. Both members went on to major solo careers before reuniting for a second album, No Fear of Time, in 2022, twenty-four years later.
