History
Rapsody, born Marlanna Evans on January 21, 1983, in Snow Hill, North Carolina, is an American rapper who found hip-hop late, discovering it while battle-rapping with a student crew at North Carolina State University. There she met producer 9th Wonder and became one of the first artists signed to his label, Jamla Records. She released her independent debut, The Idea of Beautiful, in 2012, then built momentum with mixtapes and a guest verse on Kendrick Lamar's Grammy-winning To Pimp a Butterfly. Signing with Jay-Z's Roc Nation, she released Laila's Wisdom (2017), which earned Grammy nominations for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song. Her follow-up, Eve (2019), paid tribute to influential Black women through its Queen Latifah- and GZA-featuring tracklist and became her highest-charting album. She has continued releasing music into the 2020s, including Please Don't Cry (2024) and a joint album with producer Madlib, MadRaps (2025). Busta Rhymes once called Laila's Wisdom the best hip-hop album he'd heard in years, from any artist.
