J. Cole
West Coast hip-hop from the 2010s: jazzy electric piano, live upright bass, sparse trap hats, defiant and menacing in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.
Style: Conscious hip-hop
History
Jermaine Lamarr Cole, better known as J. Cole, was born January 28, 1985, on a U.S. military base in Frankfurt, West Germany, and grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He broke through with the mixtape "The Come Up" (2007), then moved to New York for college and signed to Jay-Z's Roc Nation in 2009, releasing "The Warm Up" and "Friday Night Lights." His sound blends Southern and East Coast hip-hop with introspective, conscious lyricism, and he produces most of his own records. Every one of his studio albums, from "Cole World: The Sideline Story" (2011) through "2014 Forest Hills Drive," "KOD" (2018), and "The Off-Season" (2021), has debuted atop the Billboard 200 and gone platinum. "KOD" landed six simultaneous top-20 Hot 100 hits, a feat no artist had managed since the Beatles in 1964. He also runs Dreamville Records, home to JID, Ari Lennox, and EarthGang, and has won two Grammy Awards.
