History
Smino, born Christopher Bjorn Smith Jr. on October 2, 1991, in St. Louis, Missouri, grew up in a musical family: his father played keys, his mother sang, and his grandfather played bass for Blues Hall of Fame legend Muddy Waters. After moving to Chicago for college at Columbia College Chicago, he co-founded the collective Zero Fatigue with producer Monte Booker, Jay2, Bari, and singer Ravyn Lenae, and later formed the supergroup Ghetto Sage with fellow Chicago rappers Saba and Noname. His 2017 debut album blkswn, released on March 14 (a nod to St. Louis's 314 area code), drew critical acclaim for its fusion of Midwestern hip-hop, neo soul, and funk, a style he calls "ratchet romance." Follow-ups NØIR (2018), Luv 4 Rent (2022), and Maybe in Nirvana (2024) featured guests like J. Cole, Doechii, Lil Uzi Vert, and Thundercat. He earned a Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album in 2022. In 2021 he discovered, through a shared uncle, that he is related to Florida rapper Denzel Curry.
