History
Jean Grae, born Tsidi Ibrahim on November 26, 1976 in Cape Town, South Africa, is a rapper and writer raised in New York City's Hotel Chelsea, the daughter of jazz musicians Abdullah Ibrahim and Sathima Bea Benjamin. She started out in the mid-1990s as "What? What?" in the group Natural Resource, releasing singles on Makin' Records, before going solo in 1998 and adopting the name Jean Grae, a nod to the X-Men character Jean Grey. Her sound sits in hip hop and progressive rap, built on dense, fast wordplay; critic Robert Christgau praised her "rapidity, clarity and idiomatic cadence," and a 2019 analysis by The Pudding found she uses one of the largest vocabularies of any rapper studied. Key releases include Attack of the Attacking Things (2002), This Week (2004), and Jeanius (2008) with producer 9th Wonder, whose recording leaked online years before its official release. She has worked with Talib Kweli, The Roots, Pharoahe Monch, Immortal Technique and Masta Ace, and in 2018 released the joint album Everything's Fine with her husband Quelle Chris, ranked among Rolling Stone's best hip-hop albums of that year.
