History
A Tribe Called Quest formed in 1985 in the St. Albans neighborhood of Queens, New York, when high school friends Q-Tip and Phife Dawg started rapping together. The lineup rounded out with DJ/producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad and rapper Jarobi White, all classmates at Murry Bergtraum High School. In 1988 the group helped found the Native Tongues collective alongside De La Soul and the Jungle Brothers, pushing an Afrocentric, jazz-sampling alternative to the harder-edged rap dominating the era. Their run of albums, including People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm (1990), The Low End Theory (1991), and Midnight Marauders (1993), is widely credited with shaping alternative and jazz-rap. The group split in 1998, reunited in 2006, and released a final album, We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service, in 2016 shortly after Phife Dawg's death. Despite four Grammy nominations and no wins, the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2024, becoming only the 12th hip-hop act to receive that honor.
