Inspiration, name-free
Pete Rock & CL Smooth
West Coast hip-hop from the 1990s: jazzy electric piano, live upright bass, sparse trap hats, defiant and menacing in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.
Style: Conscious hip-hop
History
Pete Rock & CL Smooth were an American hip hop duo formed in Mount Vernon, New York, after the pair met at Mount Vernon High School. Producer-DJ Pete Rock (Peter Phillips) built tracks from obscure soul and jazz samples anchored by horn-driven hooks, while MC CL Smooth (Corey Penn) rapped in a conscious, largely profanity-free style closer to Native Tongues acts than to the gangsta rap dominating the early 1990s. Signed to Elektra Records through DJ Eddie F's Untouchables management, they debuted with the EP All Souled Out in 1991, then released the album Mecca and the Soul Brother in 1992, which reached No. 43 on the Billboard 200 and No. 7 on the R&B albums chart. Its centerpiece, "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)," paid tribute to Troy "Trouble T-Roy" Dixon of Heavy D & the Boyz, who died in 1990, and became the duo's signature record. A second album, The Main Ingredient, followed in 1994. The pair later drifted apart, and in a 2024 interview Pete Rock publicly confirmed the split without detailing its cause.
