History
People Under the Stairs were an American hip hop duo from Los Angeles, formed in 1997 by Christopher Portugal (Thes One) and Michael Turner (Double K), who met while attending high school in the city's Mid-City neighborhood. They built their sound on old-school, sample-based production, digging through jazz, funk, rock, and spoken-word records rather than following the mainstream West Coast sound of the era. Their debut single, "The Next Step II," was a self-pressed 12-inch of roughly 500 copies, and their first album, The Next Step, followed in 1998. After finding a stronger fan base in Europe than at home, they signed a four-album deal with Om Records in 1999 and went on to release Question in the Form of an Answer (2000) and several more LPs through the 2000s and 2010s. In 2002, Thes One faced fellow Angeleno will.i.am in a beat battle. The group released its final album, Sincerely, The P, in 2019 before disbanding; Double K died in January 2021, mourned publicly by artists including Chuck D and Questlove.
