History
KRS-One, born Lawrence "Kris" Parker on August 20, 1965 in Brooklyn and raised in the South Bronx, is a foundational figure in hip hop. In the mid-1980s he teamed up with DJ Scott La Rock, a social worker he met while homeless, to form Boogie Down Productions. Their 1987 debut Criminal Minded, built on tracks like "South Bronx," "The Bridge Is Over," and "9mm Goes Bang," is widely credited as a blueprint for hardcore and gangsta rap. Days after the album's release, La Rock was shot and killed, a tragedy that pushed KRS-One toward socially conscious, Afrocentric material and earned him the nickname "The Teacher." He founded the Stop the Violence Movement, H.E.A.L., and the Temple of Hip Hop, and went solo in the early 1990s with albums including Return of the Boom Bap. His stage name is a backronym for "Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone." In 2008 he received the BET Awards Lifetime Achievement (I Am Hip Hop) Award for his influence on the genre.
